Ghana and Zimbabwe Sign 10 MOUs

Ghana and Zimbabwe have signed 10 memoranda of understanding covering a wide range of sectors, with an additional agreement sealed between two private companies from both countries.

The government-to-government agreements cover cooperation in political and diplomatic consultations, health, energy, tourism, sports and recreation development, archives, and research, training and documentation between the two countries’ foreign service institutes.

The agreed minutes of the inaugural session of the Ghana-Zimbabwe Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation were also signed, alongside a trade-focused agreement between ZimTrade and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority.

Rounding out the government agreements was a memorandum between the Institute of African Knowledge and the Ghana Museum and Monument Board, covering collaboration on the African Liberation project.

This agreement is rooted in both countries’ shared commitment to telling Africa’s liberation story through African eyes and on African terms.

Beyond the government-to-government agreements, Ghanaian waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited and Zimbabwe’s Geo Pomona Waste Management signed a separate private sector agreement, bringing the total number of documents signed during the visit to eleven.

President John Dramani Mahama, in his remarks at the closing of the bilateral meeting, said the agreement reflected the seriousness of both governments’ commitment to giving practical meaning to their bilateral relationship.

“Our two governments are determined to ensure their full and effective implementation so that our people may derive measurable and lasting benefits,” he said.

The agreements came at the end of talks President Mahama said had been comprehensive and highly productive, covering 16 sectors including energy, health, defence and security, agriculture, mining, media, labour, sports, heritage and education.

He welcomed the role of the Ghana-Zimbabwe Business Roundtable in translating the policy agreements into real business activity on the ground, calling on the private sectors of both countries to take full advantage of the framework the two governments had put in place.

President Mahama also announced his intention to visit Harare to repay President Mnangagwa’s state visit, with a date to be agreed between the two governments.
