Finance Minister Urges Ghanaians to Uphold and Protect the Cedi’s Integrity

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has urged citizens to recognize and uphold the value of the Cedi, calling for a collective effort to protect its integrity.

He said this at the launch of the Cedi@60 anniversary celebration on Tuesday in Accra.

Speaking on the theme “60 years of the Cedi: A symbol of Sovereignty, Stability and Economic Resilience,” he stated that the anniversary serves as a reminder of the Cedi’s enduring legacy and its essential role in fostering economic stability in Ghana.

The minister said as the nation reflects on its past, the Cedi emerges as a powerful emblem of unity and progress, urging all Ghanaians to safeguard their currency and continue building a prosperous future.

“As we celebrate this milestone, let us renew our commitment to preserving the dignity of our currency,” encouraging Ghanaians to embrace their economic identity with pride.

He noted that since its introduction in 1965, the Cedi has been more than just a medium of exchange; it has become a symbol of resilience in the face of economic adversity.

Dr. Forson highlighted the currency’s journey through inflation, redenomination, and recovery, emphasizing how it has facilitated trade and connected communities across the country.

“The Cedi has endured, it has evolved, and it remains the only legal tender of our Republic,” he stated, reflecting on the currency’s significance in the lives of Ghanaians.

He urged citizens to reject the practice of pricing goods and services in foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar.

“Let us talk about it with pride, not as a burden, but as a badge of economic independence,” he stated, reinforcing the message that the Cedi is an integral part of Ghana’s economic identity.
