The Northern Region has taken a major step toward economic transformation with the sod-cutting ceremony for a modern 24-hour economy market complex in Bimbila, the capital of the Nanumba North Municipality.
The event, held on Thursday, has been described as a flagship project under the government’s 24-hour economy policy.
Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ali Adolf John, who performed the sod-cutting on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, said the market forms part of a broader agenda to stimulate local economic growth, create jobs, and unlock productivity across the region.
The complex will include essential social infrastructure such as car parks, a school, a clinic, and a police station. According to the Minister, the facility will serve as a major economic hub for Bimbila and surrounding communities, providing a modern, safe, and hygienic environment for traders and businesses.
Officials say the project will boost commercial activity, increase internally generated revenue for the Assembly, and create both direct and indirect employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women.
Mr Ali Adolf John noted that Bimbila holds a special place in the rollout of the 24-hour economy market initiative and charged the contractor to ensure that the Bimbila market becomes the first to be completed under the programme, while stressing that speed must not compromise quality.
The Minister assured the contractor of his personal commitment to monitor progress closely to ensure the project meets specifications and is delivered on time.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to balanced national development, the Minister said the Northern Region remains a priority in the national agenda, adding that strategic investments like the Bimbila market would help reduce poverty, curb rural-urban migration, and position the region as an attractive destination for investment and enterprise.
Addressing residents, he called on them to take ownership of the project, emphasising that the market belongs to the people and will serve generations to come.
