First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama has called for global action to safeguard children’s futures, appealing for a peaceful world with opportunities for their growth and well-being during a special prayer session in New York.
Mrs Mahama made her appeal at the annual prayer session for children at the Tillman Chapel Church Centre, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
She told the interfaith gathering that children today face uncertainties worsened by reduced funding for essential services, growing mistrust in institutions, and diminishing hope.
The First Lady said the challenges facing vulnerable children are immense but can be overcome through collective prayer and unwavering commitment to address the changing global order.
“We gather here from different nations and cultures, but we are united by our shared faith,” she stated, adding that through prayer and leadership, “we can create a world where every child is protected and empowered to achieve their full potential.”
Mrs Mahama described the plight of thousands of children caught in armed conflicts and humanitarian crises, particularly in Africa, where their childhoods are destroyed by circumstances beyond their control. She said when nations fail to focus on policies that safeguard homes, strengthen communities, and nurture youth, children suffer most by losing parents, siblings, homes, dreams, and carrying emotional scars that can last forever.
The First Lady spoke about her personal commitment to children’s welfare through the Lordina Foundation, her non-governmental organization dedicated to underprivileged children and orphans in Ghana. She expressed hope that with broader support, similar philanthropic efforts globally could transform countless children’s lives.
Mrs Mahama led the gathering in prayer, saying: “Heavenly Father, I lift the needy and orphaned children in Ghana and across the world into your loving care. I ask that you surround them with protection, comfort, and hope for a brighter future. Provide for their daily needs, including food, shelter, clothing, and education. Bless those who dedicate their time and resources to care for them.”
“May these children grow in wisdom, strength, and joy, knowing that you love them. Guide their paths with opportunities, surround them with kindness, and let their lives shine as testimonies of your unfailing grace and provision. Amen,” she continued
The First Lady positioned the prayer session as a platform for advocacy on behalf of children worldwide, calling attention to their needs during the UN General Assembly when world leaders gather to address global challenges.
The annual prayer service was facilitated by World Vision International in partnership with the World Council of Churches, Caritas Internationalis, the Episcopal Church, and other faith-based organizations. Mrs Mahama used the platform to connect spiritual action with practical policy needs for child protection.
The First Lady’s participation in the prayer session demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to child welfare issues on the international stage while promoting her foundation’s work supporting vulnerable children in Ghana and beyond.
