The Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Major Dr Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon (Rtd), has reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the European Union (EU) to enhance disaster preparedness, emergency response, and national resilience.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by an eight-member European Union delegation to NADMO, Major Dr Kuyon (Rtd) expressed appreciation for the longstanding relationship between Ghana and the EU.
He describes it as a partnership that continues to deliver meaningful benefits in disaster management and national development.
He noted that the visit underscored the shared commitment of both institutions to promoting safety, resilience, and effective responses to natural and man-made disasters.
Major Dr Kuyon (Rtd) observed that the relationship between Ghana and the EU has evolved significantly over the years, moving beyond traditional development assistance to a strategic partnership anchored on economic growth, security cooperation, and sustainable development.
The Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union to Ghana, Mr Jonas Claes, explained that the visit formed part of efforts to maintain close communication and cooperation between the EU and NADMO.
He said the engagement was intended to enhance preparedness for disasters and strengthen coordination mechanisms between the two institutions.
Mr Claes noted that the collaboration aligns with the recent security and defence agreement between Ghana and the European Union, which prioritises mutual support, disaster risk reduction, and the safety of citizens.
As part of the engagement, officials of NADMO delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the organisation’s mandate, operational structure, and ongoing interventions in disaster prevention and response.
The EU delegation also made a presentation on consular crisis response, highlighting best practices in emergency preparedness and coordination.
The discussions provided an opportunity for both parties to exchange experiences and explore areas for enhanced cooperation in disaster risk management.
The EU delegation expressed gratitude for the warm reception they received and reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives to strengthen resilience and improve emergency response systems in Ghana.
