The Acting Director of the Information Services Department, Dr. Winifred Nafisah Mahama, has urged newsroom staff to continuously build their skills to remain effective in the fast-changing information space.
She made the call during the opening ceremony of a two-day capacity training programme for newsroom staff held on Tuesday.
Dr. Mahama said the media landscape had become more challenging due to the rise of misinformation and the growing competition within the information sector.
According to her, the department is working to position itself as the first point of contact for government information and a trusted centre for fact checking and verification.
She noted that global trends in writing, communication and information sharing continue to evolve, making it necessary for media professionals to adapt and improve their skills.
Dr. Mahama encouraged participants to actively engage in the training sessions and make the most of the opportunity.
She said the knowledge to be gained from the programme would go beyond classroom learning because participants were already practitioners in the field.
She also urged staff to continue learning after the training by taking advantage of free online courses and other professional development opportunities.
Dr. Mahama said capacity building would not only improve productivity within the information sector but also prepare staff for future opportunities such as scholarships and international programmes.
She reminded participants that the Information Services Department now forms part of the government communication machinery, adding that more is expected from staff in delivering accurate and timely information.
She further encouraged participants to ask questions, share experiences and contribute to discussions during the sessions to enrich the learning process.
Dr. Mahama thanked the organisers and facilitators for supporting the training programme and urged participants to remain committed throughout the two-day exercise.
