Balance Tech Advancement with Cultural Preservation- Tourism Minister

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called for a balance between technological advancement and cultural preservation, saying Ghana must raise children who are technologically skilled while remaining connected to their cultural roots.

Speaking during a working visit to the Upper West Region, the Minister said culture and tourism remain important parts of national development and pledged to work towards preserving Ghana’s heritage while promoting the tourism sector.

She explained that the visit forms part of a nationwide tour of all 16 regions to engage stakeholders and assess the tourism and cultural potential within each region.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening tourism and culture across the country.

The Minister commended the Upper West offices of the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Culture Directorate for working together to promote tourism activities in the region.

She praised the recently held food bazaar in Wa, describing it as an initiative that highlighted the region’s culinary heritage and encouraged community participation.

Madam Gomashie said the government would continue to provide policy direction for the sector, but noted that the growth of tourism also depends on private sector investment and support from local communities.

She reiterated the need to promote domestic tourism, stating that encouraging Ghanaians to travel within the country would strengthen national unity, deepen appreciation for Ghana’s cultural diversity and create economic opportunities for communities.

As part of the visit, the Minister announced that renowned Ghanaian musician Wiyaala would be honoured as a tourism ambassador.

She commended the artiste for promoting northern Ghanaian culture through music, fashion and international engagements, as well as her work with children through community initiatives that encourage creativity and cultural awareness.

On her part, the Chief Director of the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, Hajia Pougnaa Fati Korey, said the region has enormous tourism potential that can support economic growth and development if properly harnessed.

She expressed confidence that the visit would help position the Upper West Region among Ghana’s top tourism destinations.

The Minister’s visit also includes inspections of tourism, culture and creative arts facilities, the unveiling of Wiyaala as a tourism ambassador and the launch of the annual photography competition.
