NACOC Conducts Maiden Drug Tests for Security Service Recruits

The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Brig Gen Maxwell Obuba Mantey, has visited the Ghana Police Service and Ghana National Fire Service Training Schools in Accra to oversee drug testing of prospective applicants into the security services.

Accompanied by his Deputy in charge of Enforcement, Control, and Elimination, Lawyer Alexander Twum-Barimah, on Thursday, they sought to observe the screening process firsthand and assess its implementation across the recruitment centres.

The visit marked NACOC’s evolving mandate, as it was the first time the Commission had been actively involved in the medical screening phase of security service recruitment in the country.

According to Brig Gen Mantey, the drug testing exercise, which is taking place simultaneously across multiple recruitment centres nationwide, forms part of a broader national effort to strengthen the integrity of Ghana’s security institutions.

The Director-General emphasised that the exercise is being conducted with strict adherence to medical and ethical standards, ensuring fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality throughout the process.

The initiative aims to ensure that individuals entering the Police Service, Fire Service, and other security agencies are capable of upholding the highest standards of discipline and professionalism.

The comprehensive screening process is designed to detect the presence of controlled substances in applicants’ systems.
