Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has announced the formal transmission of an extradition request for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and his chef de cabinet Ernest Darko Akori to the United States Department of Justice.
In his address at the government accountability series press conference on Wednesday, Dr Ayine said the Office of the Special Prosecutor requested extradition proceedings on November 19, 2025, after filing 78 charges against the former minister and accomplices in the High Court.
“Following a preliminary review, our International Cooperation Unit observed that certain aspects of the request required clarification and enhancements to align with the applicable legal and procedural requirements,” the AG explained.
He said his office communicated observations to the OSP via letter dated November 25, 2025, requesting supplementary documentation to ensure completeness.
On December 9, 2025, the OSP provided the requested additional documentation and addressed the raised observations, finalizing the extradition request packages.
“Subsequently, on December 10, 2025, my office transmitted the complete request to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for onward transmission to the competent authorities in the United States of America, that is, in this case, the Department of Justice of the United States,” Dr Ayine stated.
He said it is now up to American judicial authorities to determine whether sufficient basis exists for the two accused persons to be extradited to Ghana to stand trial.
The AG declined to discuss details of the charges, noting the matters have been filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the charge sheet is a public document.
“There are 78 charges against Honourable Ken Ofori-Atta and his accomplices, and they border on causing financial loss to the state, using public office for private benefit, and so on and so forth,” he said.
Dr Ayine emphasized government’s commitment to accountability.
“What I want Ghanaians to know is that this government is committed to accountability and the government has taken the requisite steps that are legally required for the Honourable Ken Ofori-Atta and Ernest Darko Akori to be extradited to Ghana, to be brought to Ghana to face justice,” the AG stated.
