Ghana Medical Trust Fund to Launch Nationwide Patient Support Programme in June 2026

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, will officially roll out its nationwide patient support programme in June 2026, making life-saving treatment accessible to eligible Ghanaians suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases across the country.

The announcement was made by the Administrator of the Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, at the Government Accountability Series held on Monday, where she gave a detailed account of the fund’s work, progress, and vision since it began operations.

Under the programme, patients will access support through 29 enlisted hospitals strategically spread across the country to ensure that no region is left out. The hospitals range from teaching hospitals in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Cape Coast, Ho, and Sunyani to regional and district hospitals and selected private facilities. Applications will not be walk-in based but will be initiated digitally by specialist clinicians at enlisted hospitals on behalf of patients, through dedicated digital platforms already being installed and tested across participating facilities.

To be eligible, a patient must be a Ghanaian citizen, hold an active National Health Insurance card, and have a medical condition that falls within the approved conditions covered under the fund.

The initial benefit package approved by the Board of Trustees focuses on cancers, covering breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, and childhood cancers including leukemia, lymphoma, soft tissue sarcomas, retinoblastomas, and nephroblastomas.

Additional disease conditions are expected to be added to the package before the end of the year.

Madam Darko-Opoku said trained patient navigators had been deployed in all enlisted hospitals to assist patients and their families in completing enrolment forms, understanding treatment pathways, and navigating the full process of care from diagnosis to treatment.

She said the fund, established under Act 1144 of 2025, was designed to sit at the apex of Ghana’s three-tier healthcare financing architecture, complementing free primary healthcare at the base and the National Health Insurance Authority in the middle, by focusing specifically on specialised tertiary care where NHIA coverage was limited or unavailable.

Ghanaians wishing to contribute to the fund can dial *255# on any mobile network operating in Ghana.
