Residents of Shai-Osudoku District recently received an informative session about the Right to Information Law Act 989 on Rite FM. Hosted by Austin Ofori Addo, the show featured Right to Information (RTI) Officer Madam Felicia Hagan.
Madam Hagan explained that the RTI Act, passed in 2019, empowers Ghanaians to access information in public institutions and publicly funded non-governmental organizations. The law ensures transparency and accountability.
Citizens have an absolute right to access non-exempt information. Exemptions include details on Cabinet discussions, law enforcement, state security, and more.
Madam Hagan highlighted the distinctions between the Right to Information Commission (RIC) and the Access to Information Division. The RIC promotes and protects the right to information, while the Access to Information Division recruits and trains officials to serve in local public institutions and NGOs.
RTI officers are committed to delivering requested information within set timelines. If information is not provided, individuals have recourse through the Right to Information Commission.
The RTI Act extends privileges to indigent individuals and People With Disabilities (PWDs). Application forms are available for those seeking information.
Madam Hagan encouraged applicants to study the RTI Act to deepen their understanding and assured them of RTI officers’ support throughout the process.
