The Information Services Department of Shai-Osudoku District Assembly has initiated a community sensitization program to educate residents about the Right to Information Act 989 (RTI Act).
Madam Felicia Hagan, the RTI officer, and ISD staff have been actively engaging with the community, utilizing the assembly’s van to announce and explain the RTI law to the residents. Madam Hagan provided explanations in both English and Twi, while Mr. Ebenezer Bentum interpreted it in the Dangme language.
The RTI officer emphasized that the RTI Act is aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability by granting Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians access to information from central and local government bodies, as well as publicly funded and non-governmental organizations. She highlighted that the Act provides specific privileges for indigent individuals and People With Disabilities (PWDs when requesting information.
Application forms are readily available for those interested in seeking information from various public institutions and agencies, and oral transcription services are provided for those who are unable to write.
Madam Felicia Hagan encouraged individuals to refrain from relying on potentially misleading information and instead urged them to take an active role by visiting the assembly to access accurate information about government projects and policies. She emphasized that the RTI law is designed to protect individuals throughout the process of requesting information.
The community sensitization campaign reached various locations within the district, including Dodowa Township, Ayikuma, Doryumu, Kordiabe, and many others.
