On November 1, 2024, the Right to Information (RTI) Officer of the Petroleum Commission hosted an enlightening sensitization session for newly inducted National Service Personnel (NSPs) at the Commission’s headquarters. The event was part of the orientation program aimed at underscoring the significance of the RTI Act (Act 989) in bolstering transparency and accountability within governance.

Led by the RTI Officer, the session offered attendees a detailed overview of the RTI Act, including its historical context, key provisions, and practical applications. Participants learned how the Act, enacted in 2019, empowers citizens to access public information held by government entities. This framework promotes an open and accountable system of governance. The audience was also educated on the evolution of the RTI bill, which was first drafted in 1999 and became law in 2020 after significant deliberation and amendments.
During the interactive program, the RTI Officer emphasized the Act’s crucial role in enhancing transparency in government processes and fostering democratic participation. NSPs were guided on how to submit RTI requests, the procedures involved, and the legal exemptions, including those concerning national security and law enforcement. The engaging nature of the session encouraged NSPs to ask questions, allowing them to gain valuable insights into the RTI Act’s benefits for both their professional and personal lives.

In closing, the RTI Officer expressed gratitude to the management of the Petroleum Commission for facilitating the educational opportunity for the new service personnel. The session successfully equipped the NSPs with a thorough understanding of their rights under the RTI Act, empowering them to participate actively in open governance and contribute to a culture of transparency within public institutions.
