KNUST Senior High School Students Enlightened on Right to Information at Sensitization Workshop

A sensitization workshop on the Right to Information was held for students of KNUST Senior High School today at the school’s assembly hall.

The exercise sought to educate them on their right and obligations under the Right to Information law (Act 989).

The Right to Information Officer of the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly, Mr. Emmanuel Asare explained to the students that the accessing information is their fundamental right with a provision made in the 1992 Constitution.

“Article 21 (1) (f) of the 1992 Constitution states that all persons have the right to information”. He said.

Mr. Asare also noted that the primary goal of the Right to Information Act is to empower citizens, promote openness and accountability in government operations, combat corruption, and make our democracy truly function for the people.

“The Act is a significant step in informing citizens about the activities of the government and relevant private institutions”. He said.

The sessions were very interactive, which allowed the students to ask questions and share opinions concerning the Act.

The Head Teachers of the schools expressed their appreciation for such education and pledged their commitment to work within the remit of Act 989 so as to contribute their bit to the smooth implementation of the law.
