On October 24, 2024, a pivotal sensitization session on the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2019 (Act 989) was held on Success FM in Goaso, the Ahafo Regional Capital. The event was organized by the RTI Officer for Asunafo North Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). The session aimed to empower local residents by educating them about their constitutional right to access information held by public institutions, fostering a culture of transparency and accountability in governance.

The RTI Officer for Asunafo North, Mr. Obed Asante Amoah, led the session with a thorough explanation of the RTI Act, discussing its historical background and the key principles that ensure citizens’ right to information. He elaborated on the process for requesting information, associated fees, and highlighted the wide-ranging benefits of the Act for both individuals and the broader community. Mr. Amoah emphasized how the RTI law serves as a powerful tool for promoting transparency in public affairs, making it easier for citizens to engage in government activities.

The session also featured an interactive phone-in segment, where local residents actively participated, expressing their excitement and gratitude for the RTI law. Callers praised the government’s efforts to establish access to information as a fundamental right, noting how it empowers them to hold public institutions accountable. The enthusiasm shown by the community members highlighted the growing awareness and support for the RTI Act within the municipality.

In closing, Mr. Harrison Quansah, the Municipal Director for NCCE, encouraged the public to exercise their right to information whenever necessary. He underscored that public institutions can no longer withhold information that is meant for public consumption, as the RTI Act mandates its release. This sensitization exercise marks a significant step in promoting civic engagement and ensuring that the people of Asunafo North can actively participate in the governance process through informed decision-making.
