The Information Services Department of the Prestea Hun-Valley Municipal Assembly recently conducted a comprehensive sensitization program at Oyeeman FM in Aboso, aimed at educating the public about their rights under the Right to Information Act 2019 (Act 989).
The Act, which was passed by Parliament and assented to by the President on May 21, 2019, guarantees access to information from both public institutions and relevant private bodies.
During the session, officers explained the core aspects of the RTI Act, including its significance, key facts, and the procedures for accessing information from public institutions. They emphasized that the right to information is enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, Article 21, paragraph (f), and empowers individuals to access information, promoting transparency and accountability.
Officers underscored that the RTI Act allows citizens to enjoy and protect their fundamental freedoms, encourages transparent institutions, enhances service delivery from government ministries and departments, and fosters public participation in matters that concern them. Everyone was reminded that they have the right to access information from any public or relevant private institution.
The public actively participated in the session, expressing their views and contributions through a phone-in segment. One caller encouraged everyone to seek information actively and commended the officers for their efforts.
The officers urged every individual in the municipality to make full use of the Right to Information Act, emphasizing that it is a tool that empowers citizens and promotes accountability, transparency, and open government. This sensitization program is part of a broader effort to ensure the public is well-informed about their rights under the RTI Act 2019.
