The Right to Information (RTI) unit of the Information Services Department (ISD) conducted an informative session for members of the Ga West Municipal Assembly on Tuesday, 24th September 2024, to raise awareness about the Right to Information Law (RTI Act 2019, Act 989). The session, aimed at educating the public and municipal members, was an important step in ensuring that citizens are well-informed about their rights under the RTI Act and how to effectively access public information.
The RTI Officer leading the session emphasized the central objectives of the law, highlighting its role in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. The RTI Act is designed to empower the public by providing access to information from public institutions and certain private entities, thereby fostering an open government and reducing corruption. The officer explained that through this law, citizens can demand information on matters of public interest, which is crucial for ensuring government accountability.

In the session, attendees were guided through the procedural aspects of requesting information under the RTI Act. The RTI Officer clarified the steps involved in filing a request, which includes submitting a written application to the relevant public institution, specifying the information sought, and providing contact details for feedback. She also discussed the timelines for response, noting that information requests must be addressed within fourteen days, and outlined the fees associated with accessing certain types of information, especially if reproduction costs are involved.
Participants expressed a positive response to the session, with many attendees noting that they had previously been unaware of the RTI Act and its provisions. The education program was met with enthusiasm, as it empowered citizens with the knowledge they need to hold public institutions accountable and exercise their right to information. By raising awareness and promoting the RTI Act, the Ga West Municipal Assembly is contributing to the wider goal of building a more transparent and responsible government, where citizens are active participants in the governance process.
