The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has endorsed his commitment to aligning Ghana’s prison system with the Nelson Mandela Rules, an internationally recognized set of guidelines for the humane treatment of prisoners.
He made these remarks when the Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Mr. Christoph Capelle, called on him on Monday in Accra.
The Minister outlined a series of reform initiatives for the Ghana Prisons Service, which included the introduction of modern technology for prison management, implementation of prison-based agricultural projects, and the establishment of prison industrial programs aimed at rehabilitation and skills development.
Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak expressed his full support for the UNODC’s work and pledged continued collaboration between the Ministry and the organization to advance these initiatives.
The Officer-in-Charge of the UNODC Programme Office, Mr. Capelle, highlighted both current and past projects undertaken by the UNODC in Ghana, underscoring their dedication to crime prevention and criminal justice reform.
He presented the Nelson Mandela Toolkit to the Minister, a comprehensive resource developed to guide humane prison management in line with international standards.
The meeting between both parties was a shared commitment to transforming Ghana’s criminal justice system through innovation, strategic partnerships, and adherence to global best practices.
