As part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability in governance, the Information Services Department (ISD) held a sensitization session on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989) at the Methodist Junior High School in Kukurantumi on April 9, 2025. The event aimed at educating students and staff on their constitutional right to access information held by public institutions. The session, led by an Information Officer, emphasized the vital role of the RTI law in empowering citizens to demand transparency in public service delivery.

During the engagement, participants were introduced to the background and historical development of the RTI Act. The Information Officer explained how the law seeks to strengthen democratic governance by enabling citizens to access information, which is crucial for holding public officials accountable. The sensitization further highlighted the benefits of the Act, including the promotion of good governance, prevention of corruption, and enhancement of public participation in decision-making processes.
Key topics discussed included the procedures for applying to access information, the rights of individuals under the law, including minors, and the specific types of information that can be obtained from public institutions. Participants were also briefed on who is responsible for handling information requests and the cost implications involved. Importantly, the officer noted that vulnerable groups such as indigent individuals, persons with disabilities, and those categorized as poor are exempt from any associated fees, ensuring inclusive access to information.

The interactive session saw active participation from both students and teachers, who expressed a renewed interest in using the RTI Act as a tool for academic and civic empowerment. Numerous questions were raised and thoroughly addressed, leaving attendees with a clearer understanding of how to navigate the process of requesting public information. The engagement forms part of a broader strategy by the ISD to demystify the RTI law and promote a culture of openness and informed citizenry in the Abuakwa North Municipality.
