The Minister for Transport, Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has reiterated the government’s commitment to revitalizing Ghana’s rail sector as a crucial alternative to the heavily utilized road network.
He made this statement on Tuesday during an interview with Forbes Magazine, emphasizing the government’s unwavering dedication to enhancing Ghana’s transportation infrastructure across all key sectors.
The Minister noted that both rail and sea (water) transport have significant untapped potential to alleviate traffic congestion and substantially boost overall productivity within the country.
Mr Nikpe emphasized a strategic vision to develop the rail, road, aviation, and marine industries to meet international standards.
To achieve this ambitious development, he highlighted the government’s strategic approach of engaging in Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).
“This collaborative model aims to attract vital private sector investment and expertise into both the rail and water transport industries, fostering innovation and efficiency,” he said.
Mr. Nikpe outlined specific plans for leveraging Ghana’s natural resources, stating the government’s intention to develop the Volta Lake into a major transportation artery, opening up new possibilities for both passenger and freight movement.
“This initiative aligns with the broader vision of establishing multi-modal transit corridors across the nation.
“These corridors, as envisioned by the Ministry, will seamlessly integrate various modes of transport, including rail, road, and water, to ensure the efficient and effective flow of goods and services.” The minister added.
