Government to Strengthen Support for Child Abuse Victims

The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed the government’s plan to strengthen the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) to better support victims of child abuse and exploitation.

He announced this when the UNICEF Ghana Representative, Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali, called on him on Thursday in Accra to commend the government for its commitment to child rights.

The Minister stated that newly constructed police stations are being designed with provisions for juvenile cells, demonstrating the government’s dedication to protecting children’s rights.

According to him, the ministry was also incorporating child rights policing into the training curriculum for police officers, which aims to equip law enforcement personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively handle child-related cases.

Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali expressed his appreciation to the Minister and assured him of UNICEF’s continued support and collaboration in promoting child welfare and protection in Ghana.

He lauded Ghana for being the first country to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1990, evidence of the nation’s longstanding commitment to safeguarding the welfare of children.
