On Monday, October 28, 2024, the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training Service (GTVETS) hosted a sensitization program on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2019 (Act 989) for its management and staff. The session, facilitated by Mr. Edward Dotse, the RTI Officer for GTVETS, took place in the Service’s conference room and aimed to equip staff with a deeper understanding of the RTI Act and its implications for public access to information.

The event was attended by key figures from GTVETS, including Madam Lily Djima, Deputy Director-General of Management Services, along with various directors, heads of departments, and other staff members. The presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the RTI Act, covering the historical context of its enactment, its core provisions, and the responsibilities of public institutions in ensuring the public’s right to information. The session also clarified the legal exemptions to information access under Act 989, helping attendees grasp when and how certain information may be withheld.
The sensitization program proved to be a valuable initiative, successfully deepening the understanding of Act 989 among the management and staff of GTVETS. By strengthening their knowledge of the RTI Act, the Service is now better positioned to enhance transparency and foster a culture of open access to information, which is vital for promoting accountability and civic engagement in Ghana’s public sector.
