Ghana Navy Calls for Stronger Regional Cooperation to Enhance Maritime Security

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) of the Ghana Navy, Commodore Asiedu-Larbi, has called for stronger regional cooperation among African institutions in addressing maritime security challenges and promoting peace, security and development across the continent.

He made the call when Members of Parliament and parliamentary officials from across Africa paid a familiarisation visit to the Eastern Naval Command as part of activities marking the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family, Sovereignty and Values.

Commodore Asiedu-Larbi expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as a significant opportunity to strengthen understanding of maritime security issues and the strategic role naval forces play in safeguarding national and regional interests.

According to him, maritime security remains a critical component of economic growth, regional stability and national development, making collaboration among African countries essential in tackling shared threats within the maritime domain.

“The challenges confronting our maritime space transcend national boundaries and require coordinated responses from governments, security institutions and policymakers across the continent,” he noted.

The FOC stated that the visit provided delegates with a firsthand opportunity to appreciate the Ghana Navy’s operational capabilities and its contribution to maintaining security within the Gulf of Guinea, one of Africa’s most strategic maritime zones.

In a gesture of support, the Deputy Clerk in charge of Corporate and Financial Management Services of Parliament, Dr Gloria Sarku Kumawu, acting on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin presented fifty life jackets to the Ghana Navy.

As part of the programme, the delegation embarked on a sea trip aboard Ghana Navy Ships (GNS) VOLTA and GNS ANKOBRA, where they observed selected naval operations and demonstrations, and engaged with personnel of the Ghana Navy.
