MahamaCares Administrator Explains How Ghanaians Can Access the Programme

As public interest in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund grows, the Administrator of the fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku has laid out a clear process for Ghanaians seeking to benefit from the programme, addressing widespread concerns about how to gain access to support.

To qualify, an applicant must meet three basic requirements: they must be a Ghanaian citizen, hold an active National Health Insurance Scheme card, and have a medical condition that falls within the approved conditions covered under the fund.

One of the most important clarifications the Administrator made is that patients cannot walk directly into the Trust Fund’s secretariat to request support.

The process is entirely digital. Applications are initiated by specialist clinicians at enlisted hospitals on behalf of patients through a dedicated digital platform, meaning the entry point for every patient is through a doctor or specialist at one of the hospitals enrolled in the programme.

The Patient Support Programme will be delivered through 29 hospitals distributed across the country.

They are Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital, Sunyani Teaching Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Eastern Regional Hospital, Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Volta Regional Hospital, Kumasi South Hospital and the Northern Regional Hospital.

Others include the Upper West Regional Hospital, Upper East Regional Hospital, Sefwi-Wiawso Hospital, Goaso Municipal Hospital, Bole Municipal Hospital, Worawora Government Hospital, Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, Baptist Medical Centre, University of Ghana Medical Centre, 37 Military Hospital, International Maritime Hospital, The Bank Hospital, Trust Specialist Hospital, and Aisha Hospital.

The nationwide rollout of the Patient Support Programme is scheduled for June 2026.

Ghanaians who wish to contribute to the fund can dial *255# on any mobile network in the country.
