The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has rolled out a comprehensive passport reforms, including a new chip-embedded passport and other changes aimed at modernizing service delivery and improving security.
He said this at the occasion of the introduction of a mass roll out and practical demonstration of the chip-embedded passport on Monday in Accra.
“The dynamic nature and the constant evolution of crimes perpetrated with traveling, security and identity require a more advanced approach in the design, production and acquisition of these valuable state documents,” he said.
The Minister added that the initiative aims to eliminate the long-standing frustrations of applicants, end the era of middlemen known as “goro boys,” and address the issue of over 70,000 uncollected passports.
“This is not just a launch event. We are demonstrating that we are fully prepared for a mass rollout of the chip-embedded passports and ready to implement a complete reset of our passport systems,” the Minister said.
He said in compliance with ICAO requirements, the old biometric passports remain valid until 2030 adding that you can switch to the chip-embedded passports any time before 2030 whether your passport has expired or not.
He added that, when you apply for passport renewal, you will be issued with the new chip-embedded passports, you will not be charged extra fees for delivery.
“Ghanaians living abroad are equally entitled to benefit from these passport reforms. They have not been left out. Our Embassies and High Commissions are ready to serve them. The Passport Application Headquarters will commence 24-Hour operations from Monday, April 28, 2025,” he added.

On his part, the Director of Passports, Mr. Kwasi Asante said the new passport was not just a travel document but represents the dedication to technology advancement, security and efficiency.
“With its advanced security features, including chip and biometric data, this passport will provide Ghanaians with a secured, reliable means of identification both domestically and internationally,” he noted.
