The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a Health and Safety Fund to support firefighters who sustain severe injuries in the line of duty and to provide for the education of the children of firefighters who lose their lives while serving the nation.
Speaking at the launch on Monday in Accra, the Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, highlighted the challenges faced by firefighters, including obsolete tools and inadequate resources.
He assured the public that the government was committed to retooling and modernizing the GNFS hence this initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing the welfare of firefighters and their families.
Mr. Muntaka condemned attacks on firefighters and the vandalism of firefighting equipment, calling on civil society, religious leaders and community groups to speak out against such acts.
He also commended the GNFS for its commitment to national safety and strategic leadership urging individuals, institutions and partners to support the GNFS in equipping the Service, contribute consistently to the Fund each year and ensures it remains effective and fully resourced.
The Acting Chief Fire Officer (CFO). Madam Daniella Ntow Sarpong, reiterated the challenges faced by the GNFS, particularly inadequate resources and equipment.
She expressed pride in the Service’s achievements and its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property.
A presentation of awards was given to outstanding firefighters in recognition of their distinguished service.
