ENHANCING TRANSPARENCY IN PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS: RTI SENSITIZATION FOR FEEDER ROADS STAFF

In a pivotal move to promote transparency and accountability within public institutions, the Right to Information (RTI) Commission recently hosted a sensitization program for staff at the Department of Feeder Roads in Accra. This initiative aimed to equip employees with essential knowledge and skills to effectively handle RTI requests, fostering an environment of openness in public service delivery. By engaging directly with staff, the RTI Commission is reinforcing its commitment to ensuring that citizens can access vital information about public services.

The session began with an overview of the RTI Act, emphasizing its significance in enhancing public service accountability. Participants learned about the procedures for managing RTI requests, including the importance of timely responses and the regulatory role of the RTI Commission in overseeing compliance and investigating public complaints. Discussions also covered exempt information, such as matters related to national security and personal privacy, providing staff with guidance on identifying and addressing these sensitive cases appropriately.

Mr. Peter K. Yawson, the program chairperson, underscored the crucial role of transparency in public service, urging staff to take their RTI responsibilities seriously. He highlighted that ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse for non-compliance, warning of the legal and reputational consequences that could arise from failing to uphold these standards. Framing transparency as a moral obligation, Mr. Yawson’s remarks resonated with attendees, reinforcing their duty to serve the public with integrity and accountability.

Vincent Dela Goka, the Information Officer, further called on staff to actively support the RTI Unit, advocating for a collaborative approach to uphold the law and set a standard for proactive information access. The commitment expressed by staff and management to the principles of the RTI Act marked a significant shift towards embracing transparency within the department. Recognizing the need for ongoing training, attendees acknowledged that further education on the RTI Act would be beneficial as they continue their essential work in infrastructure development. This sensitization program by the RTI Commission is a crucial step toward strengthening public trust and ensuring that Ghana’s public institutions operate with transparency and accountability.
