The Electoral Commission of Ghana’s Savannah Region recently engaged in an informative session about the Right to Information Act 2019 (Act 989). This one-day event took place at the regional directorate of the Commission and was attended by ten key officers.
Mr. Johnson A. Y. Akafia, the Regional Commissioner, opened the session by discussing the significance of the RTI bill’s journey and the increased public involvement in the administration of public institutions.
Vincent Agyapong-Mensah, the Right to Information Officer, then provided a detailed overview of Act 989, covering its operationalization, exemptions, and how to access information from relevant public institutions. Agyapong-Mensah stressed the importance of proactive information sharing to comply with the Act and avoid potential sanctions.
He also shed light on the Right to Information Commission’s role and powers, sharing insights into some of the Commission’s decisions and sanctions. The need for diligence in the discharge of public duties, particularly in preparation for the 2024 general elections, was emphasized.
In closing, the Regional Commissioner expressed gratitude for the informative session and the assurance of support from the RTI Officer. He affirmed the Commission’s commitment to adhering to the Act and ensuring the public’s right to information.
