The Birim North District Assembly has successfully concluded an extensive awareness campaign aimed at educating the public about the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) during July and August.
The campaign, targeting various community members, including final-year Junior High School students from Hweakwae D/A Basic School and residents of New Abirem, focused on informing citizens about their rights under Article 21(f) of the 1992 Constitution. By promoting transparency and accountability in public affairs, the assembly sought to empower participants to understand the significance of accessing information.

Throughout the campaign, sensitization sessions covered critical topics such as the purpose and benefits of the RTI Act, categories of exempted information, application procedures, and penalties for non-compliance. Attendees were educated on the time limits for information requests and associated payment details, equipping them to effectively navigate the process.
Feedback from participants indicated that public access to information encourages greater participation in democratic processes, while increased transparency helps diminish corruption among public officials. Many expressed optimism about the RTI Act’s potential to transform governance in the district, emphasizing its role in holding officials accountable and promoting responsible resource management.
However, the discussions also highlighted challenges in implementing the Act, underscoring the need for continuous improvements. In response, the RTI Officer recommended several measures to enhance execution, including encouraging the public to actively request information from institutions, ensuring routine access to data, and using the RTI Act as a tool against corruption.
The campaign concluded with a compelling call to action for community members to actively utilize their rights under the RTI Act, reinforcing the significance of public engagement in establishing a transparent and accountable governance framework in the Birim North District.
