On Thursday, February 13, 2025, the Right to Information (RTI) Officer for Atwima Nwabiagya North engaged a segment of the Asuofua community through a live radio program on Heroes Community Radio. The session was designed to raise awareness about the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), particularly focusing on the rights and procedures outlined in the law. The officer elaborated on Article 1 of the Act, which grants citizens the right to access information held by public institutions, empowering them to be informed and participate actively in governance.
The community was also educated on the provisions of Articles 5 to 17, which highlight the exemptions under the Act. While the RTI law guarantees the public’s right to information, these articles clarify that certain information, such as national security or private matters, may be exempt from disclosure. This part of the sensitization aimed to provide a balanced understanding of the law, ensuring that the public comprehends both their rights and the limitations within which information may be withheld.

The discussion also covered the procedures for making an information request, as outlined in Article 18. The RTI Officer guided the community on how to formally apply for information, emphasizing the importance of following the proper channels and using the correct application forms to ensure their requests are processed efficiently. This aspect of the program sought to empower the public by demystifying the process and encouraging transparency in dealings with public institutions.
In closing, Daniel Nana Nhyiraba Adonteng, the RTI Officer for Atwima Nwabiagya North, urged the public to take a proactive role in requesting information rather than relying on hearsay or rumors. He stressed the importance of being informed citizens, as the RTI law provides a powerful tool for holding public institutions accountable and ensuring open governance. The session concluded with a call for greater participation in the democratic process through informed engagement with public affairs.
