In a collaborative effort to promote active citizenship and raise awareness about the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council, the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly, and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) conducted a week-long citizenship program. The initiative aimed to empower young students in the region and revolved around the theme, “The Role of the Child in Consolidating Ghanaâs Democracy and Building National Cohesion.”
The program included visits to seven schools in the Goaso Municipal area, namely Methodist Primary/JHS, Nana Bosompra JHS, Islamic JHS, R/C JHS, Presby JHS, Bright Star JHS, and Assemblies of God JHS. Each day’s activities took place from 7:30 am to 9:00 am.
The primary goal of the program was to instill a sense of responsibility in the students, emphasizing their potential as change-makers in nation-building and active participants in strengthening Ghana’s democracy. Presenters underlined the importance of good citizenship and reminded students of their role as patriotic citizens.
The program also provided an opportunity for two Right to Information (RTI) Officers, Mr. Theophilus Nti-Antwi and Mr. Obed Asante Amoah, to educate students about the RTI Act. They explained that “Access to Information” is one of their rights enshrined in the 1992 Constitution under Article 21. Students were sensitized to the significance of the RTI Law and encouraged to reach out to the RTI Officers with any inquiries or requests for information.
This initiative aimed to empower young Ghanaians with a deep sense of citizenship and inform them about their rights to access information. By nurturing a new generation of responsible and informed citizens, the program contributed to the development and democratic principles of Ghana.
