In a proactive move to foster open governance, Isaac Esuon, the Right to Information Officer for the Agona West Municipal Assembly, spearheaded two key sensitization sessions on the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989). These events, which targeted students and local youths, were held on August 16 and 21.

The first session took place on August 16 at Siddiq Senior High School in Agona Nyakrom. Students gathered in the dining hall for an engaging PowerPoint presentation led by Mr. Esuon. The interactive format enabled students to learn about the essential elements of the RTI Act, with many expressing newfound understanding and appreciation for the law’s implications.
Following the school event, Mr. Esuon collaborated with the National Youth Authority of Agona West on August 21 to further educate the community during the International Youth Day celebrations. This session was hosted at the Assisim Methodist Church Auditorium in Agona Swedru and attracted a diverse audience, including various invited guests. Participants commended the efforts to raise awareness about their rights to access information under the RTI Act, highlighting its significance in promoting transparency and accountability in local governance.
Throughout both sessions, Mr. Esuon articulated the key provisions of the RTI Act, emphasizing citizens’ rights to obtain information from public institutions. He encouraged attendees to utilize these rights to hold government officials accountable and ensure responsible management of public resources.

The success of these sensitization sessions illustrates the vital role of education in effectively implementing the RTI Act. As young people become more aware of their rights, they are better equipped to engage in democratic processes and call for accountability from their leaders. The Agona West Municipal Assembly’s initiative to connect with schools and local youth demonstrates a commitment to nurturing a culture of openness and civic responsibility. This sets a positive precedent for future educational programs aimed at enhancing public participation in governance.
