Gideon Appiah Ofosu, the Right to Information (RTI) Officer for the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly conducted an engaging sensitization session for WMB Zion Senior High School students in Akim Old Tafo on June 28, 2024. The event aimed to educate the students about their rights under the RTI Act, including the procedures for accessing information held by public institutions. The session sought to empower the younger generation to become more engaged and informed citizens by fostering an understanding of these rights.
Mr. Ofosu covered essential topics such as the right to access information, the application process for information requests, applicable fees, and the contacts for handling these applications. The officer also highlighted the various benefits of the RTI Act, emphasizing how it can be utilized to support educational pursuits and promote transparency in governance. The students and staff left the session with valuable insights, expressing a keen interest in leveraging the Act to enhance their academic and civic engagement

The interactive nature of the event allowed for numerous questions from participants, all of which were thoroughly addressed by the RTI Officer. This dialogue not only clarified any misconceptions about the RTI Act but also encouraged students to think critically about the role of information in their education and communities. The enthusiastic participation underscored the importance of such initiatives in fostering a culture of transparency among the youth.
The successful sensitization session exemplifies the vital role of RTI officers in promoting awareness and understanding of the RTI Act at the community level. By equipping students with knowledge about their rights, the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly is taking significant steps toward nurturing informed citizens who can actively participate in governance and advocate for their needs. As the initiative continues, the hope is to inspire more young people to engage with the RTI framework, ultimately contributing to a more transparent and accountable society.
