On February 17, 2024, the Seventh Day Adventist Church-Central in Kukurantumi hosted a crucial sensitization session on the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989). This event aimed to implement the constitutional framework designed to promote transparency and accountability in public affairs while safeguarding the public interest in a democratic society. By educating residents about their rights under the RTI Act, the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly sought to empower the community to access information held by public institutions effectively.
During the session, participants were provided with a comprehensive overview and history of the RTI Act, including its significance in fostering open governance. Key topics covered included the right to access information, the application process for requesting information, associated fees, and the numerous benefits of the Act. The informative nature of the presentation sparked enthusiasm among the congregation, who recognized the potential of the RTI Act to enhance civic engagement and accountability in local governance.
The attendees actively participated in the session, posing numerous questions related to the practical application of the RTI Act in their daily lives. Mr. Isaac Esuon, the Right to Information Officer, addressed each inquiry thoroughly, ensuring that residents felt confident about navigating the processes involved in accessing information. This interactive dialogue underscored the importance of community engagement in understanding and utilizing the RTI Act as a tool for greater transparency.
By the end of the sensitization session, participants expressed their gratitude to the government for advancing such a significant piece of legislation. The positive reception of the RTI Act among the congregation reflects a growing awareness of the importance of open governance in Abuakwa North. The Municipal Assembly’s commitment to educating the community not only fosters informed citizenship but also reinforces the foundation for accountable governance, empowering residents to advocate for their rights and actively participate in the democratic process.
